North Vancouver Ladies’ Lawn Bowling Club

The City of North Vancouver is inviting bids to build a new lawn bowling club on City-owned land. The project will include a two-storey clubhouse, two lawn bowling greens, and a parking lot. The site is located east of the Mickey McDougall Community Recreation Centre and Gym, on land that is currently a park. The southeast corner of the site will be developed as a parklet, which will be connected to the Green Necklace Urban Trail.

The North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club is moving three years shy of its centennial anniversary. They’re leaving their longtime home, with a natural grass playing surface. However, they’re hoping to move to a new artificial turf surface just down the road. While the new location is an exciting one, the club is not without its challenges. The Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club was founded in 1912. In 1914, it was situated in Queen Elizabeth Park next to a pitch and putt golf course. The original purpose of the club was to construct a bowling green and a clubhouse, and to add two more greens. The club used the funds raised by the shares to buy a property, build a green, and purchase equipment. In 1917, the club was registered, with John G. Whitacre as president and W. Smith as secretary.

The club also honors its long-time member Joan Turner, who played with her sister Marjory Speed. Turner won numerous trophies during her playing career and served as secretary/treasurer of the Greater Victoria Ladies Lawn Bowling Association, a predecessor of the BSI. She won the Women’s Gold Medal singles at the 1980 summer games in Kelowna. She was also one of the first ladies to participate in an umpire’s competition, and was a member of the Provincial Committee. In 2004, the club established the Joan Turner Mixed Triples tournament.

Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park

If you are looking for a great hiking destination in the Vancouver area, you may want to consider visiting Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park. Abby Grind trailhead

Strong hikers can complete the trail in an hour or less. The Abby Grind trail is a popular destination for fitness training, as it is just over 4 km long – 2.5 miles long.

The hike begins in dense forest, with occasional views of the valley below. The hike is relatively short but steep, so it is important to take your time and pace yourself. It’s recommended to hike one way for the first four miles and then return via the less steep route. You’ll find that there’s no trail marker at this point, but there’s an unmarked path at the far right corner of the trail.

The Abby Grind trail is the beginning of the Glen Ryder Trail, which continues to Taggart Peak. There are several different levels of difficulty and length, and it’s important to plan ahead for the hike. There are also various difficulty levels, so be sure to pack the essentials. This old road from the logging days, crosses powerlines and leads to the Brothers Creek Trail. The trail is a good choice for beginners or families. The scenery along the way is beautiful, and the hike is not difficult. It’s worth a try, even if you’re not in the best of physical shape.

Among the best hiking trails in the West Vancouver area, the Brothers Creek Loop is an excellent choice. The trail is easy to follow and is mostly wide. It climbs alongside Brothers Creek and is shared by bicyclists and cyclists. While the trail is a bit bumpy, it’s still well-marked, and the terrain is flat and relatively flat. At the end of the hike, you’ll reach the Lost Lake sign, which has an incredible view of the city.

The trail is surrounded by old growth trees, and it includes an old bridge. If you’re into biking, you can continue on the trail to the alpine lakes side trails. The alpine lakes side trails are another great option, and the overall length of this trail is 5km. You can extend this hike up to the highest point by following side trails and a bridge. The trailhead for this hike can be found by following the B.C. Parks sign, located near the Nordic area parking lot. You can follow this trail to the summit, which is five kilometers round trip. Once the trailhead is fully installed for the season, you can continue on the loop to Hollyburn Peak. The trail is moderately trafficked and is well-marked for hikers. You can even bring your snowshoes if you haven’t tried them before.

Another popular trail in the area is Hollyburn Peak Trail. It runs for 1.3 kilometers from the Nordic Ski Area and climbs over 400 metres. Once at the top, it intersects with Baden Powell Trail, a popular downhill ski trail in West Vancouver. The trail also leads to the downhill skiing area. You can also stay at the Hollyburn Lodge and enjoy the scenery from above. This hike is the perfect place to relax after a long day of work or school.

Baden Powell Trail

Spencer House

The oldest house in West Vancouver is Spencer House, which was built in 1913 and is listed on the community heritage register. It was featured in a 1918 West Vancouver promotional brochure illustrating the idyllic lifestyle in a natural setting. The house was also the highlight of the Gardens Beautiful Tour in 1939, praised for its flower-filled gardens, rare shrubs and trees, and spacious lawns. While extensive renovations have changed its form and scale, much of its original character has survived.

Originally named Aberthau Mansion, the house underwent several renovations, which contributed to its modern form. The house now features a new main doorway on West 2nd Avenue. The interior features an elegant oak room with ribbed plaster ceilings and linen-folk oak paneling. Its location on the highlands of the Point Grey neighbourhood allows it to offer breathtaking views of English Bay, the Gulf of Georgia, and the City of Vancouver.

The Spencer House was built on 10 acres in the Kerrisdale district, where a wealthy businessman owned an acreage. The property was named Wilga, after a shrub in Australia that was resistant to drought. While the Martin brothers spent millions on the building, they lost their fortunes. William Martin became bankrupt by 1917 and his daughter Elinor said her father sold the property to Franciscans for very little money.

Navvy Jack House

During the past 150 years, Navvy Jack and his family have lived in the Navvy-Jack House in the downtown core. They moved there when they were young and eventually became part of the indigenous community. The West Vancouver Council, which owns the house, recently approved the demolition, but not before a Heritage Advisory Committee examined the Navvy-Jack House.

Originally built in the 1860s, the Navvy Jack House is the oldest continuous-use residence in West Vancouver. The building was built by Coast Salish Chief John Thomas. He and his wife Magdeleine raised four children in the home, which is still standing today. Their descendants include many Squamish people and Leonard George. Today, a museum commemorating the history of the Navvy Jack House is located in West Vancouver’s historic downtown core.

The Hycroft Manor is a historic property in West Vancouver that is now a convention centre. Originally built for the University Women’s Club, this historic home is still a popular location for weddings, social events, and corporate meetings. However, the Hycroft is not without its ghosts. According to rumour, the house is haunted by seven spirits, including three WWI veterans and a nurse. They have been spotted on the third floor.

This massive Victorian mansion, built in 1929, features a rolled-eave roof that’s very rare in this part of the world. This house also has a garden teahouse and a coach house. The original owner of this historic house was a lawyer and liquor magnate, and the house was later owned by a lieutenant-governor. It was then later used by several religious institutions, but some features remain from its past.

The posh neighbourhood of Shaughnessy Heights is one of the oldest in Vancouver. McRae Avenue is located near the intersection of 16th Avenue and Granville Street. In this neighbourhood, you can find the McRae Mansion, better known as Hycroft. Built by industrialist Alexander Duncan McRae, Hycroft Manor is the oldest house in West Vancouver. Hycroft Manor is still open for tours, and the house also hosts events and fundraisers.


Elinor Martin grew up in the neighbourhood, and she and her brother, William, named their houses after shrubs that were drought resistant in Australia. They had built their homes in the early 1900s, and by the time they were sold to the Franciscans in the late 1930s, they had an eclectic democratic bent. As a result, the Wilga house was on Heritage Vancouver’s endangered list.

One of the most notable features of the building is its neon sign, which was donated by Jim Pattison. The neon sign was used for several science-fiction films and series, including Highlander: The Series and the Dan Mangan documentary.

The Orpheum Theatre’s Wurlitzer organ is the oldest theatre organ in Canada. It was removed in 1977 for the stage to be enlarged. It has buttons for bird’s twitter, surf sound, auto horn, door bell, and drum set. The organ was designed by architect B. Marcus Priteca and still features the Wurlitzer organ. Interestingly, the organ still plays the original Wurlitzer, even in the absence of the orchestral organ.

The Orpheum Theatre was designed by Marcus Priteca, who also designed hundreds of other Orpheum circuit theatres around the world. Priteca, a Seattle architect, incorporated a variety of cultures into his architectural design, which included grand staircases, gold leaf, and a giant gilded dome. A tour of the Orpheum includes the basement, the original ice-block air conditioning room, the 140 Czechoslovakian crystal chandeliers, and a brief explanation of how the giant chandelier was suspended.


Once a tuberculosis ward, this home later became a fraternity house and then a monastery. In the mid-1960s, it was home to the University of British Columbia fraternity Delta Epsilon, and a religious cult called the Order of St. Benedict. During this time, the building saw a lot of activity, including an archbishop who was on the run from charges of bigamy and was later linked to child abuse. Eventually, Fairacres was purchased by the City of Burnaby and is now the home of the Burnaby Art Gallery. Even today, it is home to one of the most haunted buildings in Vancouver.

The historic Spencer House is an important piece of West Vancouver history. Built in 1913, Spencer House has its own association with the Spencer family, who were pioneer retailers in British Columbia. The Spencer family was responsible for the development of West Vancouver, as well as the name of a nearby street, Westdean Crescent. Moreover, Spencer House was owned by Catherine Spencer, who was the sister of Vancouver mayor Gerry McGeer.

The Shannon Estate was put on Heritage Vancouver’s endangered list in 2011. This is because heritage officials were concerned about new building scale, height, and density. Currently, five of the property’s 10 acres are open space, which feels like an old-fashioned luxury in this age of density. In 1903, William and J.J. Miller emigrated from drought-stricken Australia to B.C., where they made their fortune in Prince Rupert. They eventually built their own home in Grandview called Kurrajong.

There are also wading pools and playgrounds for kids. This is a great spot to spend the day in West Vancouver. The swimming pool is open from May to September. If you have kids, make sure to take advantage of its lifeguard services!

This is one of the best swimming spots in the District of West Vancouver. It is the largest nude beach in Canada. It is also located on the western end of UBC campus. English Bay

Located in English Bay Park, this beach is home to many events including the Celebration of Lights fireworks festival. Every New Year’s Day, thousands of people plunge into the chilly waters of English Bay Beach for the annual Polar Bear Swim. A landmark at the southern end of English Bay Beach is the Inukshuk sculpture, a symbol of northern hospitality and a fantastic photo op. In addition to swimming, the beach also hosts some of the world’s largest polar bear swims.

For those who don’t want to venture into Stanley Park, English Bay is a great alternative. It’s close to downtown, has long stretches of soft white sand, and is bordered by Stanley Park. There’s also a concession stand with salmon burgers, which are a must-try when visiting the beach. Aside from swimming, English Bay Beach is also a great place to take a picnic.

First Beach, also known as English Bay, is located in the West End. It’s surrounded by the city of Vancouver on the north, the University of British Columbia on the east, and the Stanley Park Seawall along the west. English Bay is also home to many outdoor activities like sailing, and the sun sets from the beach. For those interested in exploring the area, the city has a wide variety of transit options, so you can walk there and still have a great experience.

The beach has an excellent view of English Bay, as well as a natural sandy substrate. However, it can be difficult to spot intertidal creatures. While the sandy substrate is not ideal for spotting sea stars, mussels, and barnacles, the rocky wall at the north end is a fantastic place to see them. During low tide, most of the rocks are exposed, so you can easily lift them up and see what they’re hiding beneath. Be sure to replace them if you’re finished, though, as these creatures rely on the rocks to hide their lives from predators.

White Pine Beach

If you’re looking for a great west Vancouver swimming pool, look no further than White Pine Beach. This picturesque beach sits in the northeastern corner of Sasamat Lake, in Belcarra Regional Park, about 11 km north of Port Moody. It offers two sandy beaches for swimming, picnic tables, and a trail around the lake. It’s also close to downtown Vancouver and Metro Vancouver.

While it may be a small beach, it’s well worth a visit – we visited in late August and found the beach empty and serene, but within a couple of hours, it was full of people. The water was warm, the beach clean, and the grounds well-kept. Families will love the warm water and fine sand. Here, you can enjoy a dip in the ocean while admiring the beautiful landscape.

Whytecliff Park is another popular West Vancouver swimming spot. Generally the cleanest beach in Metro Vancouver, this bay is perfect for swimming. Located within the park, the water is relatively shallow and it’s easy to swim in. Bring a picnic to enjoy while swimming at this popular beach. Just be sure to leave no trace! This is an area with plenty of other outdoor activities to enjoy.

While White Pine Beach is one of the best west end beaches, it can also provide an enjoyable, quiet alternative for families. With its long stretches of soft sand and beached logs, it’s close to downtown, makes it a popular swimming spot for locals and visitors alike. Its beach volleyball court is open to the public and has lifeguards on duty from late May until late September. It’s also home to the annual Vancouver Folk Fest and UBC’s Day of the Longboat.

Boundary Bay Regional Park

Boundary Bay Regional Park is located on the east side of the isthmus from the ferry terminal. Its swimming pools are open year-round. The beach is great for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. You can enter the water easily during low tide, skim boarding across the shallow waters, and enjoy the views of downtown Vancouver.
