West End
The West End was once a busy district where many immigrants from Russia, Poland, the Ukraine and other Eastern Europe countries settled. They were well represented in the neighbourhood and supported more than ten synagogues. The majority of these new residents were Jews.
As the population increased, landowners began to build new four and five-story tenements that housed the new residents. Despite this, the neighborhood’s narrow streets and fire hazards meant that the area was often considered unsafe by the city’s police department.
Urban renewal was planned to redevelop the neighborhood, but this project did not come about until the late 1950s. In the early 1960s, a group of West End residents became concerned about the destruction of their community and organized a protest. They formed the “Save the West End Committee” with the support of Joseph Lee, who fought against the demolition.
In the 1970s, a number of West End businesses opened. Some of these businesses were retail stores, restaurants, and bars. Others were offices and warehouses.
During this time, the racial makeup of the neighborhood began to change as more African-Americans moved into the neighbourhood. At the beginning of this decade, a large percentage of the West End was still mostly white.
However, with the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement and the passage of a number of important civil rights laws, African-Americans began to move into the area in greater numbers. This made the West End a center for African-American culture, with the Hammonds House Museum opening in 1985 and Pearl Cleage writing novels about the community.
The racial makeup of the area changed again, as more Black professionals moved into the area and the West End began to attract young Black families. This made the area a hub of African-American culture, with the Hammonds house Museum, the Malcolm X Festival and other events taking place throughout the neighbourhood.
Today, the West End is a cultural hub that hosts a range of theatres, restaurants, bars, music, and street art. The area is also home to several museums, including the West End Museum.
