Human Resources
Human Resources is the link between a company’s business goals and its employees, making it an essential component of any successful organization. HR is responsible for attracting and retaining the most skilled, motivated, and well-suited people possible, and it does this through an array of functions including recruitment, training, compensation, and benefits.
In many ways, HR is the heart of the company and a career in HR can be extremely stable and rewarding. A career in HR requires a bachelor’s degree or higher, and master’s degrees are popular for those who want to take their career to the next level.
The HR department is also in charge of fostering and supporting the organization’s culture, which is an important part of ensuring that everyone understands their role within the company. This includes promoting ethical standards, values and goals in the workplace. It also means ensuring that people understand how they can help the company grow and evolve as it grows.
A good human resources department can spot potential problems and act on them before they become a serious issue, such as lateness or misbehavior that may lead to termination. This can save time and money for the company in the long run, while enabling the employee to learn a valuable lesson about working within a healthy and safe work environment.
Another major responsibility of HR is ensuring that the company’s policies and processes comply with all laws and regulations. This requires a deep understanding of the legal environment and an ability to navigate through complex processes and interpretations.
HR also deals with employee complaints, which can affect morale and productivity. For example, a complaint about a supervisor can be addressed by HR before it turns into an angry, confrontational incident. This helps prevent an employee from becoming a disruptive influence on others.
With the shift to remote and hybrid workforces, health care, digital transformation and other changes in the workplace, a focus on people is increasingly important for HR professionals. These professionals must be able to adopt people-centric strategies while working in a distributed, collaborative and individualized work environment, according to Lisa Jammer, an adjunct instructor for business programs at SNHU.
