A business license is a legal document that shows you’ve met government requirements to operate your business. These regulations protect your customers and you from liability or harm.
There are several different types of licenses, depending on the industry you’re in and where you’re located. You can get these through federal, state and local agencies. Talk to your lawyer or Small Business Administration office to find out which ones you need.
Application Process
Business licenses and permits are required by a variety of federal, state and local governments in order for businesses to operate legally. They protect both businesses and customers by ensuring that they meet regulations and requirements, as well as prevent criminal activity. Getting the right licenses for your business is important, as operating without them can lead to fines and penalties or even shutdowns.
Some businesses require specialized licenses and certifications, such as those who sell or offer alcoholic beverages or tobacco products; those who provide childcare, legal services, medical care and other professional services; and others.
