North Shore
The North Shore is a community with easy access to downtown Vancouver via the Lions Gate Bridge and Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing, and features some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s home to many marinas, beaches, world-class skiing and hiking trails.
The city’s working waterfront is also located here, with the largest concentration of maritime support services in the New York Harbor, including tugboats, dry docks and barges. The North Shore is also home to many historic neighborhoods, ranging from the former railroad terminal in St. George to the West Brighton, Elm Park and Port Richmond communities.
To address these challenges, NYCEDC and NYCDCP initiated a two-year, comprehensive planning study for the North Shore, titled North Shore 2030. The study was guided by input from a wide range of stakeholders, including neighborhood groups, businesses and residents, as well as the maritime industry.
Early in the process, public workshops were held to gather information about the community’s current needs and vision for the future. Advisory committee meetings, one-on-one listening sessions and other local meetings also provided valuable feedback to the study team.
In November 2010, the project team held public presentations to provide an overview of the draft recommendations and to receive feedback. The feedback was used to finalize the vision, which included key short term priorities that could be implemented over the next 3-5 years.
Based on this feedback, the draft recommendations and a budget game exercise were incorporated into the final North Shore 2030. The study was then approved by City Council in May 2011.
