Mauna Loa is one of the most voluminous volcanoes on Earth. It rises over 4 km above sea level and stretches out over 17 km on the ocean floor. It is a shield volcano, meaning it has broad rounded slopes rather than cliff faces. It is a member of the Volcanic Islands group in the Pacific, and erupted 34 times since 1843.
Its long history has provided scientists with many opportunities to study the volcano and its effects on the local climate. Trade winds blow from east to west across the Hawaiian islands, and Mauna Loa is a key influence on the prevailing weather patterns. The eastern (windward) side of the mountain receives heavy rainfall, whereas the western (leeward) side is much drier.
Lava flows are the major threat to life on Mauna Loa. These can be as quick moving as those from nearby Kilauea, but their intensity is much lower.
Flows are a result of the weight of the molten rock pushing down onto the isostatically depressed oceanic crust below, causing it to bend. This causes the lava to break up into smaller blocks that are carried by the flows over the surface of the ground.
Geologists have also discovered a number of debris fans composed of fragmented lava that spread over the summit. These deposits may represent the earliest evidence of explosive eruptions at Mauna Loa.
The largest of these deposits was estimated to be 2.2 m (7.2 ft) in diameter and to weigh 17,000 kg (38,000 lbs). These debris fans are thought to have spewed from the summit during a period of violent and widespread volcanic activity between 1,000 and 300 years ago.
It is not known whether the eruptions occurred on the surface of the volcano or from its rift zones. However, they are known to have deposited significant amounts of basalt and sandstone.
Mauna Loa is an active volcano that erupts lava flows at an average of once every five years, though it erupted more frequently in the past 3,000 years. The most recent eruption was in 1984, when fissures opened from the summit down to 9,500 feet (2,900 m) above sea level. During this eruption, flows advanced rapidly to Hilo and then stopped.
