Food Safety Programs

UMass Extension Food Safety and Sanitation
Certification Program for Foodservice Personnel

We offer ServSafe®, a nationally accredited certification program, developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). ServSafe® is one of the certifications recognized by Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH). MDPH requires that one person-in-charge be a certified food protection manager (see Massachusetts Food Establishment Regulation 105 CMR 590.003(A)(2) (www.mass.gov/Eeohhs2/docs/dph/regs/105cmr590.pdf).

ServSafe® teaches foodservice workers how to prevent and control food safety hazards from the time they receive their ingredients to the time they serve and store foods and beverages in their establishments. It includes core food safety principles such as proper time and temperature controls, avoidance of cross-contamination, personal hygiene and sanitation, and pest control.

Course fee

$195.00 per person (includes the ServSafe® coursebook, certification exam, and other training materials).

Duration of the course (including the exam)

Two full days.

How to Become ServSafe®–Certified

  1. Register and attend a ServSafe ® workshop.
  2. Pass the ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification Exam to get your certificate.

ServSafe ® certification is valid for 5 years from the exam date.
