Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is for limited-resource families with young children. It is available in Springfield, Worcester, Lawrence, Brockton, Fall River, and surrounding areas. EFNEP participants learn to plan low-cost nutritious meals, follow dietary guidelines, prepare food safely, and manage food resources. The program is delivered by paraprofessional educators and includes both an adult program and a youth program.
Adults
Through discussions and hands-on experiences, adults in EFNEP learn how to improve the nutritional quality of the meals they serve their families. The learn-by-doing approach gives participants the knowledge and skills they need to select, prepare, and store healthful foods and handle foods safely to prevent food-borne illness. Participants also learn how to get the most value for their food dollars.
Nutrition educators, who come from the target communities, deliver EFNEP as a series of seven lessons. Participants receive a graduation certificate upon completing the program. EFNEP programs for adults are located in Brockton, Lawrence, Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester.
Youth
EFNEP reaches youth audiences through nutrition education in schools and after-school programs, in day camps and residential camps, and through 4-H EFNEP clubs and neighborhood groups. In addition to lessons on nutrition, food preparation and food safety, youth may also learn about fitness and other health-related topics. EFNEP programs for youth are located in Brockton, Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester.
